If Hong Kong is on your family’s plan, do not skip the easy day trip to Macau.
The fast ferry or the bus across the giant sea bridge gets you there in about an hour, and it buys a completely different world, Portuguese and Chinese at once. Spend the morning in the old town at the Ruins of St Paul’s and Senado Square with a stack of egg tarts, then ride the Macau Tower for the glass floor and the view, or cool off at a Cotai resort pool.
You can spend Hong Kong dollars almost everywhere, the resort shuttles are free, and you cross back for dinner. It is one of the best value day trips in Asia.
