Is a Mediterranean Cruise Worth It With Kids?

The short answer

Yes, it is. A Mediterranean cruise lets kids wake up in a new place almost every day, Greek islands one morning and an ancient city the next, while you unpack once. It fits families who want a lot of places in one week without ferries, hotel changes or packing up every other morning.

We crossed the Atlantic on the Disney Dream with all three kids. Thirteen nights, with stops in Vigo, Lisbon and Madeira.

Next June I’m hosting a group on Rhapsody of the Seas, round trip from Athens.

So yes, it’s worth it.

Why it’s worth it

You unpack once. Greece by land means ferries, and every island you add is another pack up morning. The ship does the moving overnight.

You see a lot in one week. The June group sailing goes to Santorini, Mykonos, Kusadasi for Ephesus, Bodrum, and Chania on Crete, with one sea day before it’s back in Athens. Two countries in seven nights.

The port days are long. The ship is in Santorini from 7am to 10pm. That’s time to see the island and still go back to the ship for a rest if someone needs one.

Kids see real history. Ephesus is about 19 km from the port in Kusadasi, roughly a 25 minute drive. They walk through a whole ancient city instead of reading about one.

The ship covers the downtime. Royal Caribbean’s kids club, Adventure Ocean, is on every ship, and the daytime program for ages 3 to 12 is included. Rhapsody has a rock climbing wall 40 feet above the deck and an arcade.

On our crossing the kids had their own routine on board by the middle of the trip.

What I plan around

The heat. In July 2025 the Acropolis closed until 5pm during a heatwave, with Athens around 100°F. Do the ruins in the morning and save the pool for the afternoon.

The wind. The meltemi blows hardest through the Cyclades in July and August. The group sails in June, before that.

Santorini’s tender. Small boats take you from the ship to the old port, then the cable car takes about 3 minutes up to Fira. From June to September the wait can stretch to two hours, so go up early or book a ship tour.

Excursions. Book them through the cruise line. If a port gets canceled, you get a full refund.

Who it fits best

Kids who like a new place every day. Five ports in seven nights keeps them moving.

Families planning a first trip to Greece. You get a taste of five places, and you’ll know which island you want to come back to for a week.

Families with a mix of ages. Younger kids have the kids club. Older kids can climb the wall or walk Ephesus with you.

Parents who don’t want to plan ferries. The ship handles it.

If your crew would rather settle on one beach for a week, two islands by ferry is the better fit. My Greece island hopping guide walks through that, and the Greece family travel guide has the rest.

My Santorini with kids guide covers the island itself. For the ship side, here’s Royal Caribbean with kids and Celebrity Cruises with kids. If you’re comparing lines, I answered if a Disney cruise is worth it for a family, and thirteen nights on the Atlantic with three kids shows how ours do at sea. Every line I plan with is in my cruise guides.

Mediterranean cruises with kids, your questions

Is a Mediterranean cruise good for kids?

Yes. Kids see a new port almost every day, you unpack once, and the ship has a kids club and things to do in the evenings.

What is the best month for a Mediterranean cruise with kids?

Our group sails in June. July and August bring the strongest meltemi winds in the Greek islands, and summer heat waves can close sites in the afternoon.

Do kids need shore excursions on a Mediterranean cruise?

Not in every port. Booked through the cruise line, an excursion is refunded if the port is canceled.

Is Santorini easy with kids from a cruise ship?

Yes, with a plan. Santorini is a tender port, so a small boat takes you ashore and the cable car takes about 3 minutes up to Fira. Summer lines can be long, so go early or book a ship tour.

How far is Ephesus from the Kusadasi cruise port?

About 19 km, roughly a 25 minute drive.

Is there a kids club on Royal Caribbean in the Mediterranean?

Yes. Adventure Ocean is on every Royal Caribbean ship, and the daytime program for ages 3 to 12 is included in the fare.

Is a balcony worth it on a Mediterranean cruise?

On a port heavy week you’re barely in the room, so an interior works. I still love a balcony for coffee and the sail in.
