Of the three cities in India’s Golden Triangle, Jaipur might be the most fun for kids. It is a whole city painted pink, ringed by hilltop forts, with a palace of a hundred windows and a garden of giant stone sundials you can climb on.
You ride a jeep up to a honey colored fort with a mirror palace that sparkles when you light a single match. You photograph the pink honeycomb Hawa Mahal, built so royal women could watch the street unseen. You climb the steps of Jantar Mantar and watch a shadow the size of a building tell the time. And the bazaars spill out with puppets, bangles and gemstones.
Base in the city with a good driver and a hotel with a pool, do one big fort or palace a day, and it is a joy rather than a slog.
