27 weeks

27 weeks collage How far along| 27 weeks Baby’s Size| According to Babycenter.com you should be an average of 2 lbs and 14 1/2 inches long. This week they compare you to a head of cauliflower (last week it was an english cucumber). Weight Gain| I don’t go to the Dr. again until February 5th…so not sure. Sleep| Off and on…I wake up about 2 times to pee and my hips kill me when I lay down. They are so sore. But, my new boppy pillow has helped quite a bit! Clothes| Still in non maternity T’s…although I may be pushing it, and my maternity jeans. I did purchase a fancy dress for my Brother-in-Law’s wedding. I hope it still fits in a month! Cravings| No cravings, but love blackberries, blueberries and strawberries… and pink grapefruit. Food Aversions| Adam made some egg and toast thing yesterday for breakfast, I’m not sure what it was, but something said, “Don’t put me near your mouth, or else) Symptoms| My hips ache and when I go on long fast walks, my thighs turn red and itch like there are fire ants all over. I also can’t eat too much because that full feeling is THE WORST. Movement| He enjoys moving, practicing his running or swinging (im not sure). But it has become so apparent that I am now guessing which body parts I am feeling. He still likes to stay really low and to the left of my body. He pretty much is always horizontal (from what I feel). Belly Button| Still in, although Adam likes to play with it and it looks just like the bottom of a balloon. Baby’s Sex| Boy Boy Boy Highlight of the Week| This is the end of my 2nd trimester. I can’t believe it. Oh, and Adam had his Daddy Boot Camp which I am sure he will write about later.  What I miss| Being able to see my thighs…and tying my own shoes comfortably. This week I laid in my bathing suit out by the pool (in a private backyard)…and couldn’t even see my bathing suit bottoms!
What are the most important things you learn as a parent?

That you will not do it perfectly and that is not the goal. That kids remember how they felt more than what they were given. That the hard seasons pass. And that showing up consistently matters more than any individual parenting decision you will ever agonize over.

How do you balance parenting with everything else in life?

Imperfectly and continuously. The balance shifts rather than stays fixed. Some seasons are work-heavy, some are kid-heavy, some are partnership-heavy. The goal is not equal distribution but intentionality about where attention goes and honesty about when the current distribution is not working.

What advice would you give to parents considering a major life change?

Talk to your kids honestly and earlier than feels comfortable. They handle truth better than they handle sensing that something is happening but not knowing what. And ask for their input even on decisions that are ultimately yours because being heard matters even when the outcome is not what they wanted.

How do kids adapt to big changes?

Better than most parents expect, especially when the adults around them are honest and stable. Kids take emotional cues from their parents. If the adults are anxious and secretive, kids become anxious. If the adults are clear and calm, kids adjust. The hardest changes are the ones parents are not settled about themselves.

What do you wish you had known before having kids?

That each child is entirely different and what worked for one will not reliably work for another. That the early years are harder and faster than anyone tells you. That the goal of parenting is to gradually work yourself out of a job. And that being present is more rare and more valuable than being perfect.
