When Is the Best Time to Visit London With Kids?
Early to mid June is the sweet spot for most US families. American schools are out, London schools are in session until July 22, 2027, and it stays light past 9pm. Next best is Thanksgiving week or a March spring break before Easter. Skip London’s own half terms if you can.
Everyone says spring or fall for London. That’s fine if you can pull your kids out of school whenever you want.
Most of my families can’t.
So the real question is which of YOUR breaks lines up with a week when London kids are in class.
That’s the week the museums and the Tube are calmer.

London dates are from Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea schools for 2026 and 2027. Other boroughs are close but can be off by a day or two.

Three windows that work
Early to mid June
Your summer starts, theirs doesn’t. Dinner on the South Bank at 8pm and it’s still light. Avoid their half term, May 31 to June 4.
March
Daffodils in the parks and a lot fewer people. Pack a raincoat. Go before March 26, when London’s Easter break starts.
Thanksgiving week
Regent Street lights go on November 5, 2026. London kids are in school, so weekday museums are calmer. Dark by about 4pm.
Daylight
Plan the day around the light
In winter, do the Tower, the parks and the river walks in the morning. Save the museums for after dark.
In June, you can push dinner late and still walk back in the light. If jet lag has the kids wide awake at 9pm, it’s still light out.
Summer
If August is your only window
It’s busy. UK schools are out too, and the big museums feel it.
Book anything with a timed ticket the minute you have dates.
The good part is Kids Week. From July 20 to August 31, 2026, a child 17 or under could see a West End show free with an adult paying full price. Tickets went on sale June 9. Watch for the 2027 dates in the spring.
And stay somewhere you can walk from. We stayed at the Residence Inn by London Bridge, and Borough Market was a walk away. On a hot, crowded day, being able to walk home matters.

A March spring break works well, as long as it ends before London’s Easter holiday starts on March 26, 2027. If your break falls in early April, expect the museums and the Tower to be a lot busier.
