When Is the Best Time to Visit Japan With Kids?

Thanksgiving week is my favorite for most US families. Japanese kids are in school, the weather is cool and the fall colors are starting. Next best is a March spring break for cherry blossoms. Skip Golden Week, April 29 to May 5, 2027, and think hard about late July and August.

Most guides tell you spring or fall for Japan.

That’s true. But most of my families can’t pick any week they want. They have a school calendar.

So I put two calendars side by side. Yours and Japan’s.

The best week is the one where your kids are off and Japanese kids are still in class.

Two calendars

Your school breaks next to Japan’s

Your US break Japan that week What it means for you
Thanksgiving week Kids in school, fall colors My favorite. Cool days, good walking weather
Christmas break Kids off about Dec 26 to Jan 6 Cold in Tokyo and Kyoto, snow in Hokkaido
Presidents’ Day week Kids in school Quieter and chilly, a good snow trip
Mid March spring break Kids in school until about Mar 25 Blossoms may just be opening. Calmer
Late March or early April break Spring break and peak blossoms Gorgeous and busy. Book early
Late April into May Golden Week, Apr 29 to May 5 Trains and hotels fill up. Avoid it
June, right after school ends Rainy season, about Jun 8 to Jul 20 in Tokyo Wet and sticky, but kids in school
Late July and August Summer break, about Jul 20 to late Aug Hot, humid, busy. Typhoons in Aug and Sep

Japanese school dates are the usual ranges. Schools set their own calendars, so they can be off by a few days.

Golden Week is when Japan goes on holiday. In 2027 it runs Thursday, April 29 to Wednesday, May 5, with a weekend in the middle. Trains and hotels fill up and prices jump.

Rainy season averages June 8 to July 20 in Tokyo and June 6 to July 19 in Kyoto. It isn’t constant rain. It’s wet and sticky, and you plan around it.

Late July and August are hot and humid, and Japanese kids are off too. If summer is your only window, start early in the day and save the museums and the aquarium for the afternoon.

Winter

If Christmas break is your only window

It works. Bring warmer clothes than you think.

When we lived in Yokohama, we moved in February. The hallways in our guest house weren’t heated, and the walk to the bathroom at 2 in the morning was COLD.

Hotels are warm. Old buildings, temples and train platforms are not.

For snow, go north. Hokkaido is the one for a real winter trip, and the Sapporo Snow Festival is in February.

Before you book

Sort these first

“I taught social studies for eight years, so I read a school calendar before I read a flight schedule. For Japan I look at two. Yours, and Japan’s. Then we pick the week.”

Quick answers

What is the best month to visit Japan with kids?

November, if your kids are on a US school calendar. Thanksgiving week is cool, the fall colors are starting, and Japanese kids are in school. Late March is next, for cherry blossoms.

When is Golden Week in 2027?

Thursday, April 29 to Wednesday, May 5, 2027. Showa Day is April 29, then Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day on May 3, 4 and 5. Friday, April 30 is a regular workday, but a lot of people take it off.

When is cherry blossom season in Tokyo?

Usually late March into early April. In 2026 the first blooms opened around March 19 and full bloom came at the end of March. Kyoto runs a few days behind Tokyo.

When is the rainy season in Japan?

On average about June 8 to July 20 in Tokyo and June 6 to July 19 in Kyoto. Hokkaido gets much less of it.

When are the school holidays in Japan?

Spring break is usually about March 25 to the first week of April. Summer break is about July 20 to late August. Winter break is about December 26 to January 6. Schools set their own dates, so they vary a little.

Is summer a good time to visit Japan with kids?

It’s hot and humid, Japanese kids are on break, and typhoon season runs through August and September. I’d only do it if summer is the only time you can go.

Is Thanksgiving week a good time for Japan with kids?

Yes. It’s my favorite. The 2026 forecast had Tokyo’s maples peaking around November 29 and the ginkgo trees a few days before. Kyoto’s maples run into early December.

Is Japan good in winter with kids?

Yes, if you want snow. Hokkaido is the place for it. Tokyo and Kyoto are cold and quieter. Pack more layers than you think, because old buildings and train platforms aren’t heated like hotels are.
