What New Fees Does Japan Charge Tourists in 2026?

Japan’s departure tax went from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per person on July 1, 2026, and it’s added to your plane ticket. Kyoto also raised its hotel tax on March 1, 2026 to between ¥200 and ¥10,000 per person per night, and tax free shopping switches to a refund at the airport from November 1, 2026.

For a family of five that’s ¥15,000 in departure tax. Kids under 2 are exempt.

Kyoto’s hotel tax is per person, per night, based on the room rate. Under ¥6,000 is ¥200. ¥20,000 to ¥49,999 is ¥1,000. ¥100,000 and up is ¥10,000.

Tax free shopping changes November 1, 2026. You pay the full price with tax, then claim the refund at the airport. The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax in one store on one day, and you have to leave Japan with every item on the receipt.

Miyajima charges ¥100 per visit, added to the ferry.

Climbing Mount Fuji on the Yoshida Trail is ¥4,000 per person.
