How Much Is the Japan Rail Pass in 2026, and Is It Still Worth It for Kids?

A 7 day Japan Rail Pass costs ¥50,000 for adults and ¥25,000 for kids 6 to 11 on the official site, and kids under 6 ride free. For a simple Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka trip it usually isn’t worth it, since a Tokyo to Kyoto round trip on the Nozomi is about ¥28,340.

We lived in Japan, and I price this out for almost every family I plan for.

The 2026 official prices: 7 days ¥50,000 adult and ¥25,000 child. 14 days ¥80,000 and ¥40,000. 21 days ¥100,000 and ¥50,000. Green Car costs more.

Kids 12 and up pay adult price.

The pass covers the Nozomi now, but you pay a supplement, ¥4,960 per adult from Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka.

A Tokyo to Kyoto Nozomi ticket is ¥14,170 reserved. Round trip, that’s ¥28,340, well under the ¥50,000 pass.

It pays off when you add long trips in the same week. Hiroshima, Kanazawa, or Tokyo to Kyoto and back with a day trip in between.
