International travel with kids
Do You Need a Car Seat for Kids Traveling Abroad?
In most of Europe, kids under 135 cm (about 4 feet 5 inches) need a car seat with the orange European approval label, R129 or R44. US seats don’t carry that label, so for a rental car I book seats with the car. In Japan, kids under 6 need a seat in a private car, and taxis are exempt.
A lot of international trips don’t need a car at all. Trains do the work in Japan and most of Europe. When you do need one, the car seat question comes up fast.
By situation
What I’d do
| Getting around by | Car seat? |
|---|---|
| Trains and walking | No. Leave it home. |
| Rental car in Europe | Yes. Book seats with the car. |
| Private transfer | Ask for seats when you book. |
| Taxi in Japan | Not required |
| The plane | Optional. Your US seat works if it has the FAA label. |
Good to know
Before you pack a car seat
- Look for the FAA sticker if you want it on the plane
- Check the airline’s rules for seats and boosters
- Europe’s seats carry an orange approval label
- Kids usually ride in the back. Spain sets it at under 135 cm
- Know your kids’ height and weight for the rental desk
- A transfer with seats booked is easier than a taxi line with kids
