Crepes, the Metro, and Paris With Kids Without the Stress

Paris is more kid friendly than its fancy reputation suggests, and a few habits make it smooth for families.

For food, do not stress. A warm crepe from a street stand, Nutella or sugar, is the perfect walking snack and a reliable kid bribe. A fresh baguette, ham and butter sandwiches, and a stop at a patisserie for an eclair or a pain au chocolat cover most meals. French kids eat in restaurants, so yours are welcome too, but service is leisurely, so pick spots with outdoor seating where kids can watch the street.

Getting around, the metro is the fast way across the city, though it has a lot of stairs, which is a real thing to know if you have a stroller. Buses are slower but let kids see the city and skip the stairs. The center is very walkable in chunks.

Two practical notes. Pickpockets work the big tourist sites and the metro, so keep bags zipped and in front, especially around the tower and museums. And build in downtime, a park or an ice cream, between big sights, because Paris is a lot of walking and grand buildings for little legs.

Give Paris at least three days with kids.
