Curacao Beyond the Beach: Shete Boka, the Ostrich Farm and Christoffel National Park With Kids

After three days of beaches even the most water loving kid starts to twitch. Curacao has a handful of days out that make the island feel bigger than the west coast, and most of them fit into a morning before the heat gets serious.

Shete Boka

On the rough north coast the sea hits the rock shelf hard and at Boka Tabla it thunders into a cave you can stand inside. Shete Boka means seven inlets and a short drive links several of them. It is windy, loud and dramatic and kids love it. Hold hands near the edges, wear real shoes not flip flops, and go early because there is no shade at all.

Christoffel National Park

The highest point on the island is Mount Christoffel and the hike to the top is about two hours round trip. It is not for small kids or the middle of the day, but with a teenager and a dawn start it is a proper adventure with a view across the whole island. There are gentler driving routes through the park where you may spot the small white tailed deer that live nowhere else in the Caribbean.

Curacao Ostrich Farm

Yes, ostriches. The farm runs safari truck tours through the enclosures and kids get to feed the birds and hold an egg the size of a football. It is a bit odd and completely charming and it is one of those stops that becomes the story they tell at school.

Hato Caves

Near the airport, the Hato Caves are a guided walk through limestone chambers with pools, stalactites and a colony of long nosed bats. Tours run on the hour and take under an hour, which is about right for a six year old’s attention span. It is cool inside, which is a relief at midday.

Sea Aquarium and the dolphin academy

The Curacao Sea Aquarium is an open water setup where the tanks are fed by the sea. There are touch pools, sea lion shows and a program where kids can meet the dolphins in the lagoon. Booking ahead matters in high season.

Fitting it together

Pair Shete Boka with Kenepa beach since they are both on the northwest end. Do Hato Caves on the airport day if you have a late flight. Keep Christoffel for the family that wants to earn a view. Everything else can be a two hour break from the pool that gives the day a shape.
