Eating Seoul With Kids

Korean food is a huge hit with kids once you know what to order, and Seoul makes it fun.

Korean barbecue is the whole meal and the entertainment. You grill meat right at your table, wrap it in lettuce, and everyone builds their own. Kids love the cooking part and the endless little side dishes. Ask for the milder cuts and there is always plain rice for cautious eaters.

Tteokbokki, chewy rice cakes in a sweet and mildly spicy sauce, is the classic street snack, and the milder versions win kids over. Korean fried chicken is crispy, addictive, and everywhere. Gimbap, rice and fillings rolled in seaweed and sliced, is basically a Korean lunchbox and perfect for picky eaters and train rides.

Then the convenience stores. Like Japan, Korea’s are stocked with cheap, good food, and kids love the counters where you cook a cup of noodles right in the store. Myeongdong is the street food district to wander in the evening, with stalls of everything from egg bread to ice cream.

Save room for a bingsu, a mountain of shaved milk ice with fruit and sweet toppings, the perfect end to a hot day.
