Geneva With Kids: A Lake, the Alps and a Giant Fountain

Geneva sits at the tip of its lake with the Alps on the horizon and a giant fountain shooting water higher than seems possible. It is compact, safe and green, and it doubles as the easiest gateway there is to Mont Blanc and the high mountains just over the border. With kids, it is a smooth, easy pleasure.

The first thing to know is that Geneva is genuinely cheap to get around, which is rare here. Every hotel gives guests a free public transport card that covers the trams, buses and the little yellow Mouette boats that hop across the lake, which kids treat as a ride. There is even a free ticket at the airport for the seven minute train into town.

The highlights are easy and fun. Get misted at the base of the Jet d’Eau fountain, play on the giant chess boards in Parc des Bastions, climb St. Pierre Cathedral’s tower in the Old Town, and swim at the lakeside beaches in summer. Just outside the city, CERN’s free Science Gateway is a hands on wonder for curious kids.

And then there is the mountain. Chamonix and Mont Blanc are an hour away, close enough for a jaw dropping day trip into the high Alps. Give Geneva two or three days, build in Mont Blanc, and it is a gentle, scenic family base.
