It seems like everyone is writing about PSY these days. In the last 24 hours since I scheduled the posting I have seen 3 other blogs about it. PSY is really taking off!
This is absolutely nuts. I can’t seem to ever keep up with the KPOP music here in Korea. There are quite a few groups, all with tons of people in them with names I can’t seem to remember. All I do know is that some songs are incredibly catchy and are played all over the city.
Today, as I was scrolling through CNN’s website, I came across this song. Gangnam Style. I can’t believe it made it to CNN. You can see the video here. CNN Video
Park Jae Sang, AKA PSY, has not had amazing luck with music. In the past, his music has been very controversial here in Korea. His first album got him fined and the second was banned!
Gangnam is a part of town in Seoul. There are a few things that I, living here, pick up on as hysterical (sunbathing in the park, the fun dance moves, swimming in the jinjilbang, the ajumas on the colorful party bus) If only I could figure out who that adorable boy is!
This song has over 10 million views on Youtube in 3 weeks and has been tweeted about by Josh Groban and T-Pain.
Know your Meme has some hysterical adaptations (yes I watched them all)
If you want to know what the song is about, read below. But basically it is about the Gangnam area (upper class, fancy neighborhood) and the conservative day time women and how they get wild and cray at night. More importantly he is making fun of the “hipster” type saying something along the lines of, “I’m super cool…date me”
Oppa is Gangnam style
Gangnam styleA girl who is warm and humanle during the day
A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes
A girl with that kind of twistI’m a guy
A guy who is as warm as you during the day
A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down
A guy whose heart bursts when night comes
That kind of guyBeautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the endOppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam styleEh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh ohA girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensable girl like thatI’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guyBeautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the endOppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam styleEh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh ohOn top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or twoYou know what I’m saying
Oppa is Gangnam styleEh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh
Stay in the loop
Intentionally and incrementally. Most families who live this way did not leap from conventional to adventurous overnight. They built remote work capacity, paid down debt, tested longer trips, and had increasingly honest conversations about what they actually want from their lives. The leap feels bigger from outside than from inside.
Different for every family. For some it is long-term travel. For others it is weekend adventures close to home. What connects them is intentionality about how time is spent and a preference for experiences over accumulation. The version that fits your family is the right one.
By finding stability within the adventure rather than treating them as opposites. Routines, rituals, and family rhythms travel with you. Familiar foods, bedtime routines, and predictable family dynamics provide stability even when the location changes. Kids need consistency in relationships more than consistency in geography.
That people are fundamentally similar across cultures in what they want for their families. That comfort zone is a smaller circle than it feels from inside. That the things worth having in life require effort and discomfort to get. And that time together doing hard interesting things is the most reliable source of family closeness.
By getting clear on why you made the choices you made and returning to that clarity when the outside noise gets loud. Most families living unconventionally describe an initial period of explaining themselves that gradually gives way to just living the life. The explaining becomes less necessary as the results become visible.

We had the best time in the noraebang with this on Saturday night. Two of our Korean co-workers put on an amazing show! Such a fun song, and I’m glad you’ve posted the translation.

This song is all my students talk about! I call it the ‘riding-a-horse-whilst-handcuffed’. I still haven’t been able to master it, haha. 😀
