Seven Mile Beach is a stretch of white sand on the west coast of Grand Cayman with water so calm and clear that you can see your feet at chest height, and it is lined with condos and resorts that face it. It is one of the easiest beach weeks in the Caribbean for a family, and the condo is the way to do it.
The condos are two and three bedroom apartments with a kitchen, a pool on the beach, and a strip of sand out front with loungers. A family of five pays what one hotel room costs, cooks breakfast, and walks to the sea. The Kimpton and the Ritz are the resorts for a family that wants a kids’ club. Five nights minimum.
The sand is powder and stays cool. The water has no waves most days. The beach is public along its length, so a walk at sunset goes for miles. Public beach at the north end for the picnic tables and the shade of the trees.
The turtle center and Rum Point
The Cayman Turtle Centre is the farm and conservation center on the west end where green turtles are bred, and children can pick up a yearling from the touch tank and hold it. A lagoon to snorkel with the turtles, a slide, a nature trail and a predator tank. Half a day.
Rum Point on the north side is the other beach, a forty minute drive, with hammocks under the casuarina trees, water so shallow a toddler can walk for a hundred meters, a beach bar with a mudslide cocktail for the adults, and a dock to jump off. Sundays are busy with locals. Go on a weekday.
Hell, the town with the black limestone, for the postcard. The crystal caves for the rain. The bioluminescent bay by kayak on a moonless night for kids over six. Then back to the condo, because the beach is the reason.
