South America With Kids. Why I Would Start in Peru

If a family asks me where to start in South America and they have never been, I say Peru.

Not because it is the easiest. Because it has the thing the kids already know about.

Machu Picchu is the one South American place my kids could name before we ever talked about a trip. Gavin had it in a history unit. That matters more than people think. A 10 year old who has seen the photo and knows the story walks up to the Sun Gate as a different kid than one who is just being dragged up another hill.

Here is the shape of the trip I book most.

Lima for one night, maybe two, because that is where the flights arrive and the food is worth a day on its own. Then fly to Cusco but do not stay there yet. Drive straight down to the Sacred Valley, which sits about 2,000 feet lower than Cusco, and sleep there for three nights while everyone’s lungs catch up. Ollantaytambo is my favorite base. Kids can wander the old streets on their own and the ruins are right there.

Then the train to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. I like an afternoon arrival, a night in town, and the first bus up the next morning.

Then Cusco for two nights on the way out, when altitude is no longer a problem.

That is 8 to 10 days and it is a full trip. People try to add the Amazon or Lake Titicaca and it turns into three weeks and a lot of flights.

The altitude question comes up in every planning call, so here it is plainly. Cusco is 11,150 feet. The Sacred Valley is around 9,200. Machu Picchu itself is lower than both, about 7,970. Sleep low first and most families are fine. I have never had a client family turn back because of it, and the ones who struggled were the ones who flew into Cusco and went straight to a walking tour.

Costs are gentler than Africa or Antarctica. A good 10 day Peru trip for four with a private guide in the Valley and a decent hotel in Aguas Calientes runs well under what a week in the Maldives costs, and the memory is bigger.
