The Tokyo Stops That Wow Kids

Tokyo is enormous, so with kids I pick a few neighborhoods and lean into what each does best rather than racing around.

Ueno is my first stop for families. It has a big park, the Ueno Zoo with pandas, and several museums including the National Museum of Nature and Science, which has dinosaurs and a whole hands on floor. A full easy day.

Odaiba, out on a man made island in the bay, is a kid magnet. There is a giant robot statue that moves and lights up, a hands on science museum, an indoor theme park, and a beach with a view back at the city and the Rainbow Bridge.

teamLab is the one everyone asks about, a digital art museum where kids run through rooms of light, water, and color that react to them. It is wildly popular, so book tickets well ahead. Older kids and parents love it most.

Akihabara is heaven for a kid into games, anime, and gadgets, floors and floors of it.

Pick two or three of these across your days and leave room for the trains and snacks in between.
