Akrotiri: The Ancient World Under Santorini

Most people come to Santorini for the sunsets, but as a former social studies teacher I want to send your family somewhere else too, the ruins of Akrotiri. It is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world, and with the right build up, older kids find it genuinely gripping.

Here is the story that hooks them. Around 3,600 years ago, the volcano that made Santorini erupted catastrophically, and it buried a thriving Bronze Age town under ash, exactly as Vesuvius later buried Pompeii. Because it was sealed away so completely, Akrotiri was preserved in astonishing detail. You walk on raised walkways through actual streets and multi story houses, past pottery and drainage systems, imagining the people who fled before the eruption.

The whole site is now sheltered under a modern roof, which means it is shaded and cool, a welcome break from the sun, and manageable in an hour or so. Pair it with the Museum of Prehistoric Thira in Fira, where the famous frescoes and finds from the site are displayed, to bring it all together.

Tell your kids the volcano story before you go, and let them make the connection between the ruins under their feet and the caldera they have been swimming in. It turns a pretty island into a powerful lesson in how the earth shapes human history.
