Zurich With Kids: Where Everything Just Works

Zurich has a reputation as a buttoned up banking city, and with kids it turns out to be nothing of the sort. It sits at the head of a gorgeous lake, backed by a green mountain, with a river winding through a storybook old town. It is clean, safe and about as easy as European travel gets, the kind of place where parents actually exhale.

The kid highlights are lovely and low stress. Lake boats that run on your transit pass and count as sightseeing. One of the best zoos in Europe, with a giant indoor rainforest you walk through. A city mountain, Uetliberg, that you climb by a short train ride for big views. And in summer, clean lake and river swimming spots the locals adore.

What makes Zurich special with children is how frictionless it is. The trams, trains, buses and boats all run on one ZVV pass and arrive exactly on time. The airport is ten minutes from the center by train. The old town is compact and walkable. Nothing is a battle.

The one honest catch is the price, Switzerland is expensive, so I lean on apartments and picnics to balance it. Give Zurich two or three days, add the spectacular Rhine Falls day trip, and it is a smooth, scenic start to any Swiss adventure.
