Conch Fritters, Rock Lobster and a Fish Fry Friday: Bahamian Food With Kids

Bahamian food is conch, fish, peas and rice, and a Friday night fish fry that the whole island goes to, and it is easy for children because the best of it is fried.

Conch is the shellfish in the big pink shell, and it is in everything. Conch fritters, chopped and fried in batter, are the snack at every beach bar and the thing the kids will eat by the basket. Cracked conch is the fried steak of it. Conch salad is the raw version with lime, onion and pepper, made in front of you at a stand, for the adults. Conch chowder for a rainy day.

Rock lobster, the spiny one without claws, is in season from August to March and comes grilled with butter at every waterfront restaurant. A tail for the table. Grouper fingers and mahi for the kids who like fish.

Peas and rice, the fish fry and the sweet things

Peas and rice, pigeon peas cooked with rice in coconut and pork, is the side with everything. Mac and cheese, baked firm enough to cut in squares, is on every plate and every child eats it. Johnny cake, the dense sweet bread, with everything else.

Arawak Cay in Nassau is the fish fry, a row of shacks on the water that serves fried fish, conch and lobster with the sides, and on Friday nights there is music. Go early with children, it fills up. In the Exumas, the Chat N Chill on Stocking Island does a pig roast on Sundays.

Guava duff is the dessert, a rolled pastry with guava steamed and served with a rum butter sauce. Sky juice is coconut water, condensed milk and gin, for the adults at the fish fry. Goombay Punch is the pineapple soda the kids drink, Kalik is the beer, and a coconut from a stand with a straw.
