Okinawa gets a new beachfront resort this June, and it’s a useful addition for families specifically because of where it sits.
Courtyard by Marriott Okinawa opens June 2026 on Kise Beach in Nago City, in the northern part of the main island, overlooking Nago Bay. It’s about 60 minutes from Naha Airport by expressway, and it’s Courtyard’s first beachfront resort style property in Japan and its tenth hotel in the country overall. There are 170 rooms, all with ocean views and private balconies.
What actually matters here is the location. It sits close to the Busena Marine Park Underwater Observatory and, more importantly, to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, one of the biggest aquariums in the world and the single most requested stop I get for any Okinawa itinerary. Most of the hotel options near Churaumi have historically skewed either toward big all inclusive resort chains or smaller local guesthouses without much in between. A well located mid tier brand hotel with actual ocean view balconies fills a real gap for families who want to be close to the aquarium without booking a five star resort rate.
Courtyard as a brand has always leaned toward business travelers, practical layouts, workspace built into the room. This property is clearly trying to bring that same practical, no frills comfort to a beach setting, which tends to suit families better than an ultra luxury resort where half the property is adults only pools and quiet zones you can’t actually use with kids.
Northern Okinawa moves at a slower pace than Naha and the southern part of the island, and staying up here instead of near the airport changes the whole shape of a trip. You’re trading some restaurant variety and nightlife for calmer beaches, closer aquarium access, and noticeably less crowding. For a family trip built around beach days and one big aquarium day rather than city sightseeing, that trade makes sense.
One thing I’d flag before booking anything this new. First few months after any hotel opens tend to have some rough edges, staff still settling into routines, restaurants still working out kitchen timing. If a smooth, fully dialed in stay matters more to you than being first to try a new property, I’d give it a few months to settle before locking in dates, or at least go in knowing what a brand new opening can look like.
If Okinawa’s part of your Japan trip, I can help you figure out if north or south makes more sense for your family’s pace. You can see the fuller picture on our Okinawa city guide.
