Gamcheon, the Rainbow Hillside, and Other Busan Musts

Busan’s most famous sight with kids is a whole neighborhood painted every color of the rainbow, and it is as fun as it sounds.

Gamcheon Culture Village is a hillside of tiny houses stacked up a mountain, each painted a bright color, with murals, art, and narrow winding lanes. People call it the Santorini of Korea. You buy a little map and follow a trail hunting for art installations and photo spots, and there is a stamp book kids can collect stamps in as they go, which turns the whole visit into a treasure hunt. Go in the morning before it fills up, and know it is steep, so it is a workout with a stroller.

Down at the water, Haedong Yonggungsa is a rare Buddhist temple built right on the seaside rocks, with the waves crashing below. It is a beautiful, breezy walk and different from the mountain temples.

Jagalchi Market is Korea’s largest seafood market, a loud, lively place where kids can gawk at tanks of every sea creature imaginable.
