Gwangju is a city most visitors skip, and that is exactly why I like it for families who have already done Seoul and want to see a more everyday Korea. It is friendly, easy, and far less crowded, in the southwest of the country.
The centerpiece for kids is Mudeungsan, the mountain that rises right at the edge of the city. It is a national park with gentle family trails and big strange rock columns near the top. On a nice day it is a lovely half day in nature without leaving the city.
Gwangju is also Korea’s art city. The whole place is dotted with murals, sculptures, and galleries, and simply walking the arts districts is a free, colorful outing.
Because it sees fewer tourists, Gwangju is a place to practice a few Korean words and let the kids feel like real travelers. People are warm and often delighted to see a visiting family.
Getting around is easy with a subway line and cheap buses, and the KTX train connects it to Seoul in under two hours.
