Overland Park Just Got a Lot More Fun for a Family Weekend

Johnson County has been quietly turning into one of the better weekend spots for families in the Midwest, and this year proved it with a run of new openings.

Andretti Indoor Karting and Games opened on Nall Avenue with electric go-karts, laser tag, virtual reality, a full arcade, bowling, and a restaurant, all under one roof, built for exactly the kind of day where the weather does not cooperate and everyone under fourteen has too much energy. Tap Ins at the Greenhouse followed on Metcalf, mini golf, a beer garden, an ice cream shop, and a temperature controlled indoor golf course, which matters more than it sounds like in a Kansas July or January. 810 Entertainment brought bowling and arcade games with full food service into Prairiefire.

On the food side, Stockyards Brewing Co opened a taproom, Umami’s revolving sushi bar started doing conveyor service plus Vietnamese dishes and a boba bar, and a Yemeni coffee house called Mocha Point opened late nights with pistachio lattes and traditional chai, which is not something Overland Park had before. A Yard House and a Capital Grille are both coming to the Nall and 115th corridor before the year is out.

A few of the smaller openings are worth building a morning around too. Slow Rise is doing sourdough based doughnuts on 135th Street, crisp edged and pillowy in the middle, though right now they are only open Friday and Saturday mornings, so plan around that if you want one. La Fetta Delicatessen on Metcalf is doing an Italian deli sandwich with house made sauces and fresh baked bread, a solid lunch stop between whatever else is on the day’s list.

We live in Johnson County, on the Kansas side of Kansas City, and the thing I tell every visiting family first is that the state line matters a lot less than people assume. Children’s Mercy Park, where we have watched Sporting KC, sits in Kansas City, Kansas, right next to the Legends outlet mall and the Speedway. Kauffman Stadium, Union Station, the zoo and Starlight are over on the Missouri side. Base yourself in Overland Park or anywhere in Johnson County and you are under half an hour from most of it either way, with better parking and, now, a lot more to do on the nights you are not out at the ballpark.

This kind of growth does not usually show up in Midwest travel roundups because Kansas rarely gets treated like a destination worth writing about. It should be. A weekend built around one of these new spots plus a Sporting KC or Current match, a stop at the Legends, and a drive out to the Flint Hills covers a surprising amount of ground for a state most people fly over.

I lay out the full local playbook, where to stay, and what is worth the drive west toward Wichita and Hutchinson, in our Kansas guide.
